Introduction

A CFD Fire & Gas (F&G) Mapping Study is a performance-based assessment that uses advanced Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) simulations to evaluate the effectiveness of fire and gas detection systems under realistic hazard scenarios.
Unlike traditional geometric coverage methods, this approach models actual gas dispersion and fire behavior within the facility to assess how effectively detectors respond to credible releases – accounting for congestion, ventilation, wind, and layout complexity.

Purpose

  • Evaluate detection performance using realistic gas dispersion scenarios
  • Assess coverage for flammable gas and toxic gas events under dynamic conditions
  • Optimize detector types, locations, and voting logic
  • Enhance early detection capability to enable timely mitigation and shutdown

Outcomes

  • Scenario-based detection coverage results (e.g., % detection for defined leak cases)
  • Identification of blind spots and underperforming detection areas
  • Optimized detector layout and positioning based on CFD results
  • Assessment of detector response under realistic environmental and operational conditions
  • Recommendations for additional or relocated detectors and system improvements
  • Improved confidence in detection system performance and reliability
  • High-quality visualizations and structured report for clear communication and audit readiness
