ESSA (Escape, Evacuation and Survival Analysis)

Introduction

ESSA is a comprehensive assessment used to evaluate the effectiveness of escape, evacuation, and survival arrangements during emergency scenarios in Oil & Gas facilities.
It analyzes how personnel respond to hazardous events – such as fire, explosion, or gas release – and assesses whether escape routes, muster areas, and life-saving systems provide sufficient protection to ensure safe evacuation and survival.

Purpose

– Assess the adequacy of escape routes and evacuation strategies
– Evaluate muster locations, temporary refuges, and evacuation systems
– Analyze human response and movement during emergency conditions
– Identify potential bottlenecks, delays, or hazardous exposures during egress
– Ensure compliance with regulatory and company safety requirements
– Support the design and optimization of emergency response arrangements

Outcomes

– Assessment of escape and evacuation performance under credible emergency scenarios
– Identification of congestion points and evacuation bottlenecks
– Evaluation of muster areas and temporary refuge integrity
– Verification of evacuation timelines and survivability criteria
– Recommendations for improving layout, signage, and emergency procedures
– Inputs to Emergency Response Plans (ERP) and safety case documentation
