Introduction
A CFD Thermal Plume Study is an advanced simulation used to analyze the behavior of hot gas releases and exhaust plumes within Oil & Gas facilities.
Using Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD), the study evaluates how high-temperature gases – such as flare emissions, turbine exhaust, or process vents – disperse, rise, and interact with surrounding structures under varying environmental conditions.
Purpose
– Simulate dispersion of hot gases and thermal plumes under realistic operating conditions
– Assess temperature distribution and heat exposure to nearby equipment and structures
– Evaluate the influence of wind, buoyancy, and facility layout on plume behavior
– Identify potential recirculation, downwash, or air intake contamination risks
– Support design and positioning of vents, flares, exhaust systems and helideck (as per CAP 437)
– Ensure safe operation and compliance with environmental and safety requirements
Outcomes
– Detailed temperature contours and plume dispersion profiles
– Visualization of plume trajectory, rise, and interaction with structures
– Identification of hot spots and areas of thermal impact
– Assessment of risks to air intakes, HVAC systems, and personnel areas
– Evaluation of recirculation and ventilation performance
– Recommendations for optimal vent/stack location and design improvements
– Support for layout optimization and operational safety
– High-quality visual outputs and structured report for clear communication and decision-making
